 VGC Junior Program

Virginia Golf Club has always taken a keen interest in the progression of our junior golfers.  The likes of Greg Norman and Wayne Grady started their careers by participating in our Saturday morning clinics.  Both would become major champions.
The Club has created a 4-step development pathway to help our budding golfers realise their potential.  Golf is a wonderful game and we’d love to see as many people playing as possible.
Step 1:  Saturday Junior Clinics – “A Chance To Learn”
For youngsters looking to learn about the game, Virginia runs a Junior Clinic every Saturday morning between 8:30am and 9:30am.  The cost is $3 for members and $8 for visitors.
A team of three pros, lead by our Head Professional, Shayn Barnham, will take you through the various elements of the game.  You can work on your swing at the driving range, sharpen your short game at the chipping green or perfect the art of putting on the practice green.
Once the clinic has concluded, you can then try your luck in either a 4-hole or 9-hole competition on our third nine.  Prizes are awarded each week.
Newcomers are allowed to participate in up to 4 clinics before being required to join as a member (see step 2).
Step 2:  Sub-Junior Membership – “A Chance To Practice”
Sub-junior membership is open to all persons aged 15 years or less.  There is no joining fee and the cost is just $99 per year.
As a sub-junior member, you have the right to play the course socially and use the practice facilities at any time.  When starting out in the game, this is exactly what you need – the opportunity to play unlimited golf.
Sub-juniors can also take advantage of the $3 member’s rate for the Saturday morning clinics.
Step 3:  Full Junior Membership – “A Chance To Compete”
When ready, the next step is to become a full junior member.  There is no joining fee and the cost is $249 per year.
As a full junior member, you can submit your three cards and obtain an official Golf Australia handicap.  You can then compete in the any of the Club’s competitions – these are held on most Saturdays, Sundays and Tuesdays.  Judging from past experience, you’ll find that your game improves and your handicap starts falling.
Each year, the Club’s best junior golfers are selected to play in head-to-head match play competitions against other clubs.  This is known as pennants and in 2008, Virginia Golf Club took the Division 1 title.
Step 4:  Playing Major Competitions – “A Chance To Be Your Best”
The Greg Norman Junior Golf Foundation is a great starting place to compete against the best golfers from around Queensland.  They run clinics, camps and a series of tournaments (catering for different age groups and skill levels) throughout Queensland.  You can find out more from their website by clicking here.
The best from around the state compete each year in the Queensland Boys Amateur Championship and Queensland Girls Amateur Championship.  Both events are run by Golf Queensland.  A squad of players is selected each year to represent Queensland at the inter-state matches held later in the year.
