Major Projects - Dam PDF Print E-mail

Background
For a number of years, the Club has been working on securing a long term water supply. We have investigated a number of options ranging from sewer mining to a pipe from the nearby Golden Circle Cannery. Based on our location and the availability of land, the best option both financially and functionally is to increase our on course water storage capacity.
Although we are never going to be able to fully "drought proof" the course, the new dam should provide us with sufficient water to maintain the course when rain is lacking.
Implementation Update
   - In early 2009, we received all necessary approvals to undertake the construction of the new dam.
   - We hoped to find an excavation company who would undertake the work at no cost to the Club (as they would gain access to the soil).  We were engaged in discussions with a number of companies but their interest wained following the impact of the global financial crisis.
   - In December 2009, a Dam Construction Sub-Committee was established to look at other methods of funding this major project.  The Sub-Committee consists of Brad Irvine (Chair), David Bell (Secretary/Manager), Barry Lemke (Greens Superintendent), Chris Hunter (Club President) and David Buckle (Greens Director).
   - A comprehensive proposal was submitted on 11 December 2009 for a Federal Government Grant.  We are currently waiting on the outcome of our submission.
   - If successful, the dam's construction is likely to proceed in the near future.  We will keep you informed of future updates.
Outline of works
   - Construction of a storage facility (dam) with the ability to store approximately 50 mega litres of water. The final dam shape and area will depend on the level of funding available.
   - Installation of a transfer line and pump to move the water from our current storage facility behind the 2nd green to the new dam.
   - The extension of the current 18th tee and the redevelopment of the 16th men's and ladies' tees.
Benefits
The obvious benefit is to provide our Club with an ongoing, consistent water supply for course irrigation. This provides a greater ability to plan and manage course works and treatments as we have a larger reserve of water.
